Talking Therapy for Trauma
Trauma can affect people in many different ways, and there is no single event or experience that defines what is or is not traumatic.
You may have experienced one distressing event, or maybe there have been difficult experiences throughout your life. This could include childhood experiences, domestic abuse, neglect, bullying, loss or times when you felt frightened, unsafe or powerless. What matters isn't only what happened, but how you experienced it and the impact it has had on you.
Sometimes the effects can be obvious, while at other times you may not immediately connect how you're feeling now with things that have happened in the past. You might experience anxiety, difficult memories, nightmares, low mood or find yourself feeling constantly on edge. Perhaps you struggle to trust people, find certain situations or relationships particularly difficult, or sometimes feel disconnected from yourself.
You may even find yourself wondering why something still affects you or feel that you “should be over it by now”. There is no set way that you should feel after a difficult experience, and you don't need to compare what happened to you with somebody else's experience for it to be important.
As an integrative counsellor with a Person-Centred foundation, I offer a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where we can begin to understand what is happening for you. I won't push you to talk about things you don't feel ready to discuss, and you don't need to tell me every detail of what happened for us to work together.
Our sessions might involve exploring how experiences from the past are affecting you now, noticing patterns that seem to keep appearing in your life or relationships, or making sense of feelings and reactions that have been difficult to understand. At other times, you may simply need somewhere to talk about what you're going through and feel genuinely heard.
Counselling isn't about forcing you to relive what has happened or trying to erase the past. It's about giving you the space to understand your experiences and their impact on you, while allowing you to decide what feels important and where you would like our work together to go.
Whether what brings you to counselling happened recently or many years ago, we can take things at your pace, with no expectation that you need to be anywhere other than where you are right now.
