Domestic Abuse Counselling

Recovering from Domestic Abuse

Experiencing domestic abuse can have a profound and lasting impact, often affecting the way you see yourself, other people and the world around you.

Abuse is not always physical. It can include emotional abuse, coercive control, manipulation, intimidation, financial abuse, sexual abuse or behaviours that leave you feeling frightened, isolated or as though you are constantly “walking on eggshells.” Over time, these experiences can affect your confidence, self-esteem, relationships and sense of safety.

I have experience supporting clients who have experienced domestic abuse and coercive control, including the longer-term impact these experiences can have after a relationship has ended.

You may have left an abusive relationship, still be living within one, or be trying to make sense of something that happened many years ago. You might question yourself, minimise what happened or wonder why you stayed. Feelings of guilt, shame, anger or confusion can be difficult to carry, and after having your thoughts, feelings or choices repeatedly dismissed or controlled, it can sometimes become difficult to trust your own judgement.

As an integrative counsellor with a Person-Centred foundation, I offer a warm, safe and non-judgemental space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace. I won't tell you what you should do or make decisions for you. You remain in control of what you choose to share and what feels important for us to explore together.

In our sessions, we might look at the impact abuse has had on your life, relationships and sense of self. We can explore patterns that may have developed over time, the ways you have adapted to difficult experiences, and how the past may still be affecting you in the present. Where it feels helpful, we can also pay attention to emotions and physical responses that can sometimes be difficult to put into words.

I understand that talking about abuse can feel overwhelming, so there is no expectation for you to tell your whole story or revisit experiences before you feel ready. Counselling can be a place to begin making sense of what has happened, reconnecting with your own feelings and needs, and rediscovering parts of yourself that may have become lost along the way.

Whether you are currently experiencing domestic abuse, recovering from an abusive relationship or trying to understand the lasting impact of coercive control or emotional abuse, you deserve a space where you feel heard, believed and supported.

What Clients Say

I’ve had the privilege of having 18 counselling sessions with Alice, and I honestly can’t recommend her highly enough. I connected with Alice from our very first session, she created such a warm, welcoming, and non-judgemental space where I felt completely comfortable opening up.
